Elmore Court, a Grade II listed mansion near Stroud, Gloucestershire, has announced plans for what its owners state will be the largest beaver enclosure in the UK. This development is part of an ongoing rewilding project on the estate, which began in 2020.
The project involves a reconstruction of the land, including a new habitat for beavers, wild ponies, and pigs. These animals are intended to join the longhorn cattle already present on the estate, with their natural behaviours expected to help regenerate the landscape and encourage wildlife.
Anselm Guise, custodian of Elmore Court, stated that the project is anticipated to take two years to complete. He also noted that the initiative aims to balance nature protection and restoration with the estate's economic viability.
