Gloucestershire Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (GRASAC) is at risk of closure from April 2027 due to significant financial challenges, according to CEO Sharne Maher. The charity, which opened in 1984, needs about £500,000 to remain open each year.
Ms Maher stated that GRASAC has lost a major contract with the Police and Crime Commissioner and faces increased competition for funding from foundations and trusts. Rape Crisis England and Wales reported that more than half of rape crisis centres have closed since 1985, with 36 remaining in 2026 compared to 84 in 1985.
An integrated care board has provided funding, extending the centre's operations until July 2027. This is supplemented by £112,000 from the Ministry of Justice. Saxon Rose, a survivor who received support from GRASAC, is undertaking fundraising challenges to help the centre, aiming to raise £5,000.
