Endangered glowworms are once again shining at Nosterfield nature reserve in North Yorkshire, marking their return after a century. Female glowworms were spotted over several weeks this summer following a reintroduction effort.
The project, led by volunteer "glow-getters" and independent ecologist Pete Cooper, involved collecting glowworms from a local site, breeding them, and rearing hundreds of larvae in a garden shed. These larvae were transported north and first released at Nosterfield in 2024. Glowworms take two years to reach adulthood, with the flightless females glowing to attract males.
Volunteers for the Lower Ure Conservation Trust counted up to 12 glowing females this summer. Mr. Cooper, who volunteered his time, stated this was a "great first indicator of initial success."
The glowworm population had disappeared from the British countryside due to factors such as intensive farming, development, electric lights, and habitat loss. At Nosterfield, quarrying led to their disappearance, but since 1997, the Lower Ure Conservation Trust has been restoring former quarry land to species-rich wetland and grassland.
Mr. Cooper is developing formal standards for glowworm breeding and release, as well as habitat management. Another 1,900 glowworm larvae, bred with the help of volunteers at Westbury Wildlife Park Foundation, are set to be released at Nosterfield later this year.
