Justin Broadrick, the singer and guitarist for industrial metal duo Godflesh, has announced the band's near-four-decade career will soon end. This decision follows surgery in February 2026 for a 13cm hernia.
Broadrick, 57, experienced groin pain for several years, with a hernia first identified on 4 October 2024 after a show in Sofia, Bulgaria. He continued to perform for another year, using up to two hernia belts.
His condition was attributed to the physical strain of shouting during performances since he was 18. Broadrick stated that continuing to perform in this manner would risk entirely rupturing his abdominal wall. He reported still being in discomfort in mid-August 2026, anticipating nine to 12 months for potential full recovery from negative sensations.
Godflesh plans to release two more studio albums, beginning with "Decay" this autumn, which was recorded before Broadrick's surgery. There may also be some archival releases and remixes.
