Google backs existing publisher payment model as Apple considers new AI-linked approach

Google has affirmed its support for the current system of paying news publishers, while Apple is reportedly exploring a model that would link payments to how often its AI assistant uses journalistic content.

  • Google states it has licensing agreements covering over 5,500 European press publishers.
  • Apple is considering paying publishers based on how frequently their journalism is used by a revamped, AI-powered Siri.
  • Apple has reportedly allocated a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars for publisher payments.

Google has stated its support for the established system of paying news publishers. The company considers itself a major technology platform with a structured approach to publisher payments, with licensing agreements covering more than 5,500 European press publishers.

This comes as Apple announced on Thursday a new approach to publishers regarding multiyear agreements. Apple is reportedly considering a model that would tie payments to how often its AI assistant, a revamped Siri expected later this year, uses journalism. This differs from the guaranteed fees common in existing licensing agreements.

Apple has reportedly set aside a budget running into the hundreds of millions of dollars for these publisher payments. Google also compensates publishers when protected content, including snippets, is displayed within its AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Why this matters: The proposals highlight differing approaches by technology companies to compensate news publishers for content used in AI products, potentially influencing how journalism is valued and funded in the future.
