Google has announced it is discontinuing the "Gems" feature within its Gemini AI app. Gems enabled users to create custom AI assistants tailored for specific tasks, such as a learning coach or a vacation planner.
The company stated that the work users invested in creating Gems will not be lost. Instead, Gems will be automatically migrated to a new format called "skills" that can be used across different AI tasks. This transition is scheduled to begin on November 17, 2026, and users will not need to take any action for the change to occur.
Gems, launched in 2024, were designed to help users teach their AI to perform certain tasks without needing to repeat instructions. Google had offered pre-made Gems, and users could also create and share their own custom assistants.
