The government is currently consulting on tightening regulations around fireworks, which could impact traditional celebrations such as Bonfire Night. Proposed changes include stricter rules on noise levels, additional restrictions on F2 and F3 products, and adjustments to the regulation of some lower-risk pyrotechnics.
This consultation follows Truro's decision to cancel its Bonfire Night display for the second year running. The council stated that the event, which expected at least 5,000 attendees, could no longer proceed due to the financial and practical burden of new crowd safety requirements.
Among the proposals, the government is seeking feedback on reducing the maximum permitted noise level for consumer fireworks from 120dB to 110dB. It is estimated this change would affect approximately one third of consumer fireworks types available for sale. The consultation also asks about potential limits of 100dB and 90dB, though professional displays would still be able to use louder fireworks at this stage.
