Ms Hanson-Young, the Greens' longest-serving federal MP, stated on social media that she was discussing a leadership bid with colleagues on Tuesday. The new leader is expected to be chosen during a two-day party retreat in Sydney, planned to conclude by Thursday at the latest.
Other potential candidates for the leadership include deputy leader Mehreen Faruqi, defence spokesperson David Shoebridge, and Treasury spokesperson Nick McKim. Ms Faruqi's spokesperson indicated she is considering her options, while Mr Shoebridge declined to comment on a possible bid.
Party sources indicated that Greens MPs were surprised by Ms Waters' resignation. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wished Ms Waters well, praising her constructive approach in Senate negotiations.
