Minister for Local Energy and Jobs, Martin McCluskey, announced today the launch of the government's AI for Clean Energy Vision. This initiative aims to gather views on how artificial intelligence could transform the UK's energy system, with a focus on improving efficiency, cutting costs, and strengthening energy security.
The Vision outlines early government thinking on these applications and seeks to initiate a conversation with the public and industry. This discussion will address the role of government, AI's long-term impact on the energy system, risk mitigation, and barriers to adoption. The insights gathered will inform the AI in Energy Strategy, which is scheduled for publication next year.
Alongside the Vision, an independent review of AI deployment in electricity networks has been published. This review, led by AI Energy Champion Lucy Yu, provides recommendations to the government on developing a probabilistic grid, delivering consumer benefits, establishing clear governance, and accelerating AI solution deployment.
The government's Interim AI Adoption Plan, released in June, also highlights four key barriers to AI adoption: better data, clearer routes from innovation to deployment, trusted governance frameworks, and the necessary skills and capabilities to scale solutions across the system.
