The UK's Human Rights Ambassador, Eleanor Sanders, delivered a statement to the UN Human Rights Council's 63rd session, addressing human rights situations in several countries.
In Syria, the UK welcomed the government's steps towards political transition, including convening a new parliament and engaging the international community. However, the UK urged the government to proceed in an inclusive and representative manner, protecting the rights of all Syrians, noting the situation remains delicate.
Concerns were also raised regarding South Sudan, where the human rights situation is described as fragile, with developments casting doubt on prospects for peaceful elections. The UK remains concerned by violence against civilians, restrictions on political space, and continued impunity, including conflict-related sexual violence. All parties were urged to demonstrate restraint, engage in dialogue, and ensure accountability.
Regarding China, the UK noted that recommendations from the Office of the High Commissioner's Xinjiang Assessment have yet to be implemented. Evidence of violations in Xinjiang and Tibet persists, with freedom of religion or belief reportedly being further restricted. The UK also highlighted that the Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress risks undermining the rights of individuals belonging to minorities.
Finally, five years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the UK stated that the human cost continues to grow. The UK affirmed its steadfast support for Ukraine and efforts to hold Russia to account.
