Government launches 'New Moves Club' to boost family activity

The government has launched the 'New Moves Club' campaign, part of its 'Let's Move!' initiative, to encourage families to be more active together. This follows research indicating that 82% of parents want more family activity, but many lack confidence in their sporting ability.

  • The 'New Moves Club' campaign aims to get families trying new activities together.
  • A survey found 82% of parents want their family to be more active, but 61% avoid activities due to concerns about their ability.
  • EastEnders actress Charlie Brooks and fitness coach Joe Wicks are supporting the campaign.

The government has launched the 'New Moves Club' campaign, which is part of its wider 'Let's Move!' initiative. The campaign aims to encourage families across the country to try new activities together, with a focus on making physical activity fun and accessible.

New research reveals that 82% of parents would like their family to be more active together. However, the survey also found that parental confidence can be a barrier, with 49% of parents not considering themselves 'sporty' and 61% avoiding activities due to concerns about their ability. Additionally, 68% of parents stated it is harder to encourage their children to be active if they are not active themselves.

EastEnders actress Charlie Brooks and fitness coach Joe Wicks have joined the campaign to launch the 'New Moves Club'. Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock stated that the campaign celebrates 'having a go, and most importantly having fun', encouraging families to try new activities together.

The 'Let's Move!' campaign suggests activities that can take just 10 minutes, working towards the NHS recommended 60 minutes of daily active time for children. The research also highlighted that moving together as a family can lead to more quality time (53%), happier children (47%), and less screen time (45%).

Why this matters: Less than half of UK children currently achieve the NHS recommended average of at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. The campaign aims to address this inactivity, which can help prevent 3.2 million cases of long-term health conditions annually.

What this means for you: The campaign encourages families to incorporate 10-minute bursts of physical activity into their day to meet NHS recommendations for children's activity.
