The government has initiated an independent review into the business rates valuations for pubs and hotels, with the aim of creating a fairer system for high street businesses. The review, launched today, 24 August 2026, will be led by business rates expert Jerry Schurder.
Mr Schurder is tasked with reporting his recommendations to the Treasury by the end of March 2027, in time for potential implementation at the next revaluation. A Call for Evidence has also been opened today to ensure that landlords, brewers, hoteliers, and business owners can contribute their perspectives to the process.
Financial Secretary to the Treasury, James Murray MP, stated that pubs and hotels are vital for communities and growth, and that this review follows a 20% cut to business rates bills for pubs, social clubs, and live music venues from April 2027, which was announced last month. Pubs and hotels experienced significant increases in rateable value at the 2026 revaluation, partly due to the end of pandemic-era valuations.
Stakeholders including UKHospitality, the British Beer and Pub Association, Greene King, and Marriott International have welcomed the review, highlighting the need for reform to address the burden of business rates and ensure the system reflects current market realities.
