The government has announced a major drive to support the training and employment of 1,000 new youth workers across England. This initiative is described as the largest investment into youth services in a generation.
The first new youth workers are expected to be in position by spring 2027. They will work with young people aged 11 and over in community spaces and through outreach, focusing on those at risk of becoming not in education, employment, or training (NEET).
Additionally, a £450 million programme, the 'Youth Matters' Fund, will open for applications soon. This fund aims to build, improve, and expand youth facilities, as well as fund youth work and enriching in-person activities such as sports, music, and volunteering.
This announcement is part of the government's National Youth Strategy, Youth Matters, which was launched in December 2025. The strategy was co-produced with 14,000 young people and aims to rebuild youth services over the next decade.
