Great Britain's women's team sprint secured a silver medal at the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, with host nation China taking the gold. The British team, consisting of Paris Olympic champions Emma Finucane and Sophie Capewell, alongside Rhianna Parris-Smith, were narrowly defeated by one-third of a second.
The team had qualified in the top position, but Sophie Capewell's saddle snapped halfway through her lap during the race. Capewell stated that despite the malfunction, the team delivered a strong performance, noting that a silver medal is a positive outcome at the start of Olympic qualifying.
This marks the second consecutive world silver medal for the women's team sprint squad. Last year, Finucane, Parris-Smith, and Iona Moir finished second behind the Netherlands in Santiago. Germany claimed the bronze medal in Shanghai, beating a team of Individual Neutral Athletes.
In the men's event, the British team finished sixth, with the Netherlands winning gold ahead of Australia. The men's squad competed without double European champion Matt Richardson, who was sent home due to an investigation into misconduct allegations.
