Great British Energy has today, 17 September 2026, launched £30 million in funding to support community-led clean energy projects across the UK. This initiative, part of the 'People's Power' projects, aims to enable local authorities and community energy groups to build and control their own clean power supplies.
The funding is the first instalment of up to £1 billion previously announced, with the goal of supporting over 1,000 local and community-led clean energy projects. These projects could include solar panels on local buildings, village-owned wind farms, and hydro schemes.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that the initiative gives people power to decide on clean energy projects and feel the benefits. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh added that it puts power in the hands of people and places, allowing communities to take action on climate change.
The support includes a £20 million Community Fund for organisations in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and a £5 million Partnerships Grant for Local Authorities in England and community energy partners. An additional £1.8 million has been allocated to the Scottish Government for its existing community energy support programme.
