Green Day pulled off a heist at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, 24 July – stealing the spotlight with an electrifying ice cream truck gig! The legendary punk rock trio of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool climbed onto the roof of Mister Freezie's colourful vehicle, sending shockwaves through the Gallagher Square crowd outside Petco Park. The impromptu performance was a masterstroke – delivering a thunderous rendition of their 1994 anthem 'Basket Case' to an audience hanging on every note.
Frontman Armstrong worked the crowd like a seasoned pro, tossing ice creams and T-shirts into the frenzied fans below while Tré Cool pounded out the beat behind him. It was a joyous, unbridled display that had everyone within earshot dancing in the aisles – or, in some cases, on the rooftops! Meanwhile, film writer-director Lee Kirk, stars Mason Thames and Jenna Fischer, who both feature in the band's upcoming coming-of-age movie 'Nimrods', beamed with pride as they took in the excitement.
'Nimrods' – a heartwarming tale of three friends on a misadventurous road trip from Kansas City to Los Angeles after mistakenly believing their band has secured a support slot with Green Day (yes, you read that right!) – is set for release in UK cinemas on 11 August, ahead of its wider US debut on 14 August. The film draws inspiration from the band's own early days living out of a tour van prior to the release of 'Dookie'.
The all-star cast, including Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, Angela Kinsey, Mckenna Grace, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, and Sean Gunn, brings the story to life – but it's not just about the acting talent on display. No, this is a film that lets music be its driving force, much like Green Day themselves did in their formative years.
Speaking of which, a companion soundtrack for 'Nimrods' hits shelves on 31 July, packing 22 career-defining tracks from the band's illustrious discography – plus contributions from The Paradox, Ultra Q, and Analog Dogs. Look out for a new Green Day single, 'I'm Never Gonna R.I.P.', alongside four previously unreleased live recordings from that unforgettable Palladium gig in LA.
This latest venture follows the release of their critically-acclaimed album 'Saviors' back in January 2024 – hailed by some as their best work since 'American Idiot'. It's clear Green Day are still making waves and setting hearts ablaze, one epic performance at a time!
