Zack Polanski, the Green party leader in England, is set to challenge Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government to release an unredacted report from UK spy chiefs. The report reportedly concludes that the collapse of overseas ecosystems would have catastrophic consequences for the UK's national security.
Speaking at the Wild Summit event in Bristol today, Mr Polanski will ask the Prime Minister to publish the full report, which warns of devastating security consequences for the UK. The Guardian previously reported that the document outlines severe food shortages, price increases, migration, political destabilisation, and potential conflict stemming from ecosystem collapse.
A 14-page redacted version of the report was published in January 2026. However, the government has not released the full version despite requests from journalists and MPs. Mr Polanski is expected to argue that recent extreme weather in the UK should serve as a warning to ministers.
Separately, a coalition of green groups has written to Prime Minister Burnham, stating that national security, public health, and economic growth are at risk without urgent action to restore nature. The UK has a legally binding target to restore 30% of nature by 2030, a target the groups warn the UK is currently on track to miss.
A Labour spokesperson stated that the government is taking the risks of climate change and nature loss seriously, citing actions such as launching a taskforce on national security risks and investing in nature recovery.
