Mothin Ali, co-deputy leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, reportedly owns two buy-to-let properties in Leeds. This disclosure comes despite the party's adopted policy to reduce private landlordism.
According to The Sunday Times, Mr Ali, who is also a Leeds city councillor, holds the two rental properties through MA Holdings, a private limited company where he is the sole director. He reportedly purchased a three-bedroom former council house in Gipton for £165,000 in June 2022 and a second property in the area for £157,000 in March 2025. Both properties are believed to have buy-to-let mortgages and tenants.
The Green Party's policy, adopted last year, aims to increase home ownership and reduce tenants' reliance on private landlords, including through tax changes to make owning multiple rental properties less profitable. Green Party leader Zack Polanski has previously criticised the private rental market, stating that tenants were being treated as "cash cows".
The Green Party has stated that Mr Ali's circumstances are connected to his responsibilities towards close family members. A party spokesman indicated that deeply personal information was provided to The Sunday Times in confidence, showing that Mr Ali acted solely in the interests of vulnerable close family members for whom he has caring responsibilities. The party declined to make this information public at Mr Ali's request to protect his family.
