A motion proposing that "Zionism is racism" is scheduled for a vote at the Green Party's annual conference this weekend. An organisation named Greens for Palestine (GfP), which is not formally affiliated with the party, has encouraged individuals to join the Green Party specifically to back this agenda.
Some Green members have expressed concerns that the party could be influenced by external groups regarding the motion. The motion, which topped a members' ballot for policy issues, also calls for a single Palestinian state. If passed, it could lead to members who support Zionism facing disciplinary action for racism.
Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party in England and Wales, has faced calls to clarify his position on the motion. Polanski last week stated he is anti-Zionist, describing Zionism as a form of racism due to its alleged involvement in the displacement and genocide of Palestinians. However, he has also supported amendments aimed at moderating the motion.
Lubna Speitan, a co-author of the motion and a leading member of GfP, has rejected these amendments. GfP and Speitan have connections to the Anti-Zionist Movement (AZM), a group that advocates for the dismantling of the "so-called Jewish state" and "Zionist organisations" in the UK and globally.
A spokesperson for the Greens stated that the party is democratic and that membership growth reflects support for its full policy platform, adding that the "vast majority of members joined prior to a specific attempt at mobilisation." The spokesperson also confirmed that "The Green party does not support the views of the AZM."
