Greens to debate 'Zionism is racism' motion at October conference

The Green Party is set to debate a motion declaring "Zionism is racism" at its upcoming conference, a proposal that topped a members' vote for policy motions.

  • A motion stating "Zionism is racism" is almost certain to be debated at the Green Party conference in Brighton in early October.
  • Green leader for England and Wales, Zack Polanski, has not publicly stated his position on the motion.
  • If passed, the motion would equate Zionism with racism, call for a single Palestinian state, and could lead to discipline for members supporting Zionism.

A motion proposing that the Green Party declare "Zionism is racism" is expected to be debated at the party's conference in Brighton at the start of October. The motion came top in a members' vote for policy motions.

Zack Polanski, who leads the Greens in England and Wales, has not publicly commented on the motion. Some within the party reportedly fear its passage could alienate Jewish supporters.

If approved, the motion would equate Zionism, defined as the movement for a Jewish state, with racism. It would also advocate for a single Palestinian state and could result in disciplinary action for members who support Zionism.

Polanski is understood to have reservations about the motion, particularly concerning its potential to make Jewish members feel unwelcome or to hinder a peace process. Two amendments aimed at moderating the motion have been tabled, which Polanski reportedly appears to support.
