Works to stabilise the ground beneath Dewar Avenue in Kincardine, Fife, are nearing completion. This follows subsidence discovered a year ago, caused by old coal mine workings, which resulted in the demolition of six homes and the closure of the local community centre.
A four-month programme, which began in May 2026, involved injecting grout and gravel into the former mine workings to prevent further ground movement. Monitoring had previously identified slow, ongoing movement within the fenced-off area where the properties once stood.
The Mining Remediation Authority has confirmed that no movement has been detected beyond this area, outside of normal seasonal variation. Ross Martin, project manager at the Mining Remediation Authority, stated that incidents of this nature require careful investigation before remediation can safely begin.
Monitoring of Dewar Avenue, the community centre, and the surrounding area will continue until at least spring 2027. This ongoing monitoring aims to provide reassurance to residents and inform decisions regarding the long-term future of the site.
