Guernsey and Alderney launch alcohol consumption scorecard campaign

A new campaign in Guernsey and Alderney is providing residents with scorecards to monitor their weekly alcohol intake against recommended guidelines.

  • The 'Rethink Your Drink' scheme aims to help islanders make informed health decisions.
  • Scorecards will be delivered to residents' letterboxes to track alcohol units.
  • A 2023 survey indicated that 35.2% of adult drinkers in the islands consumed over 14 units weekly.

The Health Improvement Commission for Guernsey and Alderney has launched a new campaign called 'Rethink Your Drink'. The initiative provides island residents with scorecards to help them monitor their weekly alcohol consumption.

The scorecards encourage residents to record their alcohol intake and compare it against the UK Chief Medical Officers' low-risk drinking guidelines. These guidelines recommend that men and women consume no more than 14 units per week, spread over at least three days, with a minimum of two alcohol-free days.

Andrea Nightingale, substance use lead at the Health Improvement Commission, described the scorecard as "a simple, interactive and engaging way to help people understand their intake." The charity noted that a 2023 Wellbeing Survey found 35.2% of adults aged 16 and over who drink alcohol reported consuming more than 14 units a week.
