Tony Christie, known for the song “(Is This The Way To) Amarillo”, has shared that medical professionals suggested his continued vocal career would assist in managing the effects of his dementia. The 83-year-old musician received his diagnosis in 2023.
Christie recounted his doctor's advice, stating he was told that being in the music business was fortunate, as music is recommended for individuals with dementia. He noted that he not only listens to music but also sings it, describing it as his life.
Initially, Christie had planned to stop performing after his Great Farewell Tour next May. However, since announcing the tour, he has secured three years of additional bookings. He recently made an appearance at a launch event for m4dRADIO, a station operated by Music For Dementia, a charity for which he serves as an ambassador. Christie believes music helps those with dementia stay "connected to who you are now" and maintain links to their past.
