A recent government survey has revealed that less than a third of students in Guernsey feel confident about staying on the island. The Medical Officer Health Report indicates that 36% of young people are certain they will leave, citing a lack of career opportunities, social and shopping choices, and poor weather.
An additional 37% of those surveyed expressed uncertainty about whether their future lies in Guernsey. Concerns among 16 to 24-year-olds include housing, the rising cost of living, travel expenses, and the opportunities available after their studies.
Dr Nicola Brink, Director of public health, noted that young people are deeply invested in their future on the island but are unsure if Guernsey can provide an affordable, sustainable, and fulfilling life as they enter adulthood. The report also highlighted road transport, including fuel costs and road conditions, as the biggest current concern for young islanders, followed by a lack of activities.
Some young people also raised concerns about education, specifically a lack of teachers for certain subjects, high teacher turnover, and the condition of some school buildings. They also reported feeling unheard by the government and having limited influence over decision-making.
