Three major UK airports owned by Manchester Airports Group (MAG) have been affected by a "cyber security incident" where criminal cyber hackers accessed the data of approximately 8.7 million customers. The incident, which MAG became aware of on Tuesday, affected Manchester, East Midlands, and London Stansted airports.
The accessed data included customer contact details, vehicle registrations, and postcodes. MAG stated that the majority of the data accessed was restricted to customer email addresses from WiFi sign-ups within the terminals. More detailed data, such as vehicle registrations, came from customers booking car-park spaces, lounge access, and fast-track services.
MAG confirmed that "at no point has passenger safety or aviation security been compromised" and that the hacked system did not hold customers' bank or payment details. The group has informed relevant authorities and is working with specialist advisors.
