England captain Harry Brook smashed a sensational 42-ball century, leading his side to a dominant 119-run victory over Sri Lanka in the opening match of their Vitality T20 series in Southampton. Brook finished unbeaten on 114 from 49 deliveries, tormenting the tourists' bowlers with 10 fours and six sixes.
The 27-year-old's century was his first in 18 international innings across all formats, dating back to the World Cup win against Pakistan in February. It also marked England's joint second-fastest T20 century.
Opener Jos Buttler contributed 80 off 44 balls, sharing a 128-run second-wicket partnership with Brook. Debutant Aneurin Donald also made an aggressive cameo of 12 runs. Hampshire bowler Sonny Baker then took three wickets for 12 runs on his home ground, helping restrict Sri Lanka to 135 all out at the Utilita Bowl.
The emphatic victory on Tuesday evening also gave Kevin Pietersen a winning start in his new mentoring role with the England white-ball side. Brendon McCullum's team will continue the three-match series in Cardiff on Thursday.
