Harry Brook's Test Future Under Scrutiny Ahead of Pakistan Series

England batter Harry Brook faces renewed focus on his Test match approach as the team prepares for a series against Pakistan, following a year without a Test century and a change in coaching philosophy.

  • Harry Brook averages 53 after 38 Tests, with 10 centuries, and is second in the Test batting rankings.
  • Brook has attempted to hit 44% of deliveries to or over the boundary, a figure matched only by Travis Head.
  • Joe Root has succeeded Ben Stokes as England's Test captain, with Rob Key stating the vacancy came "too soon" for Brook.

England batter Harry Brook is under the spotlight as the team prepares for a series against Pakistan. The 27-year-old's aggressive batting style, which saw him dismissed for 21 off nine balls against New Zealand, has drawn criticism.

Despite this, Brook boasts an impressive Test record, averaging 53 from 38 matches with 10 centuries, including a triple century in Multan. He currently ranks second in Test batting behind Travis Head.

CricViz data indicates Brook attempts to hit 44% of deliveries to or over the boundary, a figure only Head matches. He looks to score off 65% of balls faced, defending or leaving 35%, compared to the average top-seven batter's split of 52/48 since his 2022 debut.

Joe Root has taken over as England's Test captain from Ben Stokes, with Rob Key suggesting the captaincy came "too soon" for Brook. Brook acknowledges getting frustrated by some dismissals but maintains his aim to be a matchwinner for England, stating, "I have the ability to hit it everywhere, I just have to figure it out quicker in games."
