Stargazers in the UK can look forward to seeing the Harvest Moon tonight, Saturday 26 September. This full moon, which is the one closest to the autumn equinox, will reach its peak illumination at 5.49pm BST.
The best views are expected after sunset, as the moon rises above the eastern horizon. This year, Saturn will also be visible near the Moon.
The Harvest Moon is known for its orange hue, which can last longer than other full moons. Historically, it provided extra moonlight for farmers during the harvest season. While there is little scientific evidence of a full moon affecting human physiology, the night sky will be noticeably brighter for several evenings around this time.
Weather permitting, the Harvest Moon will be visible across the UK without the need for a telescope. Southern and eastern England are forecast to have some of the best viewing conditions. In London, the Moon is expected to rise around 6.27pm.
