Crews in Hawaii are working to restore power to thousands of residents following the impact of Hurricane Lala over the weekend. The storm's outer bands caused destructive flooding and resulted in one fatality.

On the Big Island, which was particularly hard-hit, crews are clearing and restoring roads. However, some communities on the southern end of the island are still isolated due to communication outages.

Hawaiian Electric has reported significant damage across the island group, especially in remote areas. Crews have been working overnight to restore power to affected residents across the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu.

Most public schools have reopened, but Hawaii county's non-emergency operations remain suspended. Officials confirmed that the storm caused the death of a 90-year-old woman, who was found dead on Monday after being reported missing in Naalehu.

Hurricane Lala, which had weakened to a tropical storm, passed the Hawaiian islands on Saturday, causing damage to homes, roads, and bridges. Hawaii's governor, Josh Green, stated on Monday that the damage was not as severe as initially feared and that recovery is expected to be "somewhat brisk."

The National Weather Service reports that the storm has since moved west and is anticipated to turn north towards the Papahānaumokuākea Marine national monument.
