A head teacher was reportedly dragged to his death for more than a mile while trapped under a car, a jury at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court has been told. Simon Richardson, 35, denies the murder of Michael Mullins, 56, who was struck and killed while cycling home on 20 April.
Prosecutors allege that Mr Richardson, of no fixed address, knew Mr Mullins was under his car. Philip Barnes KC, opening the case for the prosecution, claimed Mr Richardson stopped on Wet Gate Lane and made two attempts to pull Mr Mullins from under the wheel assembly.
The jury heard that data from Mr Mullins' Apple Watch indicated his heart was still beating when the car stopped. Mr Barnes stated that Mr Richardson then drove on, with Mr Mullins eventually becoming dislodged near Wet Gate Farm in Lymm.
Mr Mullins, a married father-of-two, was cycling from Stretford Grammar School to his home in Northwich when he was struck by a black Volvo XC90. Mr Richardson also denies an alternative count of manslaughter and one of dangerous driving relating to a police chase the following day.
