The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is set to get a whole lot hotter – in more ways than one! Four sizzling parody productions of 'Heated Rivalry' are gearing up to take the stage, bringing their own brand of witty humour and high-energy performances. It's no surprise that this steamy ice hockey drama has inspired such creative frenzy, with its passionate narrative of two blokes finding love on the rink.
Just minutes into watching 'Heated Rivalry', New York-based writer and composer Dylan MarcAurele was already scribbling down notes for a parody. Before he knew it, producer Alan Kliffer had joined forces, and their show 'Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody' had sold out off-Broadway in no time – even before the script was locked in! Now, this knockout parody is heading to Edinburgh, where it'll be joined by not one, not two, but three other rip-roaring spoofs of the original series.
Kliffer reckons it's a 'given' that these parodies are popping up left and right – after all, who wouldn't want to poke fun at the show's winning combo of romance, laughs, and a devoted fanbase? On the US West Coast, TV writer Kyra Brown teamed up with Christan Leonard to create 'Puck Bunnies: A Heated Rivalry Drag Musical Parody'. This bold production brings in some serious drag flair, shining a light on the show's queer characters from a fresh female perspective.
The original series may have catapulted its leads, Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, to overnight stardom – but it was the creators' decision to keep their story full of 'queer joy' that really sealed the deal. Brown and Leonard are adamant that parodies work best when they're written with genuine affection for the source material – hence their loving jabs at 'Heated Rivalry's' happier-than-happy ending.
These musicals have been whipped up in record time, with some teams writing scripts in just a few short weeks. MarcAurele took a cheeky shortcut by relying on his fuzzy memory from that one viewing, while the cast of 'Puck Bunnies' improvised their way to some seriously dynamic text. The rapid-fire production and theatricality of 'Heated Rivalry's over-the-top emotions have made this parody party feel almost inevitable – think original tunes mixed with musical theatre parodies and pop song spoofs!
