The Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus, which opened in 1955 as Hilton's first hotel outside the Americas, has completed a refurbishment by Turkish design firm Autoban. The renovation has carefully retained the building's Turkish identity while embracing the city's changing nature.
Originally designed by Chicago-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill alongside Turkish architect Sedad Hakkı Eldem, the hotel remains one of Istanbul's most recognisable examples of mid-century modernism. Vintage details have been kept, including the original Hilton logo in the lobby, a flying carpet installation at the entrance, and the outdoor swimming pool, which is the largest hotel pool in Istanbul.
Merve Seckin, the hotel's head of marketing, pointed out restored handcrafted çintemani tiles that had remained hidden for years and, thanks to the renovation, are once more on display. The lobby is inspired by a sapphire necklace that actress Sophia Loren wore during a visit.
The hotel has welcomed royalty, presidents and Hollywood stars since opening, including Queen Elizabeth II, George W. Bush, Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando. Jazz musician Louis Armstrong performed here in 1958, and the hotel's Sazzou jazz bar pays homage to him through its cocktail menu and live music sessions.
