A wartime steam locomotive, No. 68029, has been recreated by the Tanfield Railway in Gateshead. The original 1940s-built engine was scrapped 63 years ago.

No. 68029 was among nearly 400 steam locomotives commissioned to support the logistics effort during World War Two. After the war, it continued to assist industries across the North East, including working at Tyne Dock in South Shields and hauling coal for the National Coal Board.

General manager David Watchman described the engine as one of the "unsung heroes of the steam age." The recreation, based on historical records and an identical surviving locomotive, will be part of Tanfield Railway's Run It gala on Saturday and Sunday.

What this means for you: Tickets for the Tanfield Railway's Run It gala, featuring the recreated locomotive, can be purchased on the day or via their website.
