One reader remembered a 1950s Liverpool Corporation scheme that allowed schoolchildren to purchase a “penny return” ticket for travel anywhere on the tram network during holidays. This ticket could be used for a return journey or to transfer to a different destination.
Another recollection concerned the Greater London Council, under Ken Livingstone, which reduced child bus fares to 5p as part of a scheme named Fares Fair. This occurred when Jonathan Freedland was 14 years old.
