Hither Green station will receive a multi-million-pound accessibility overhaul, with Network Rail confirming plans for new lifts and a footbridge to provide step-free access to all platforms for the first time.
The south-east London station upgrade forms part of the Department for Transport's 'Access for All' programme, designed to remove barriers for passengers with reduced mobility, parents with pushchairs, and travellers with heavy luggage.
Currently, passengers must navigate stairs to reach platforms at Hither Green. The new infrastructure will install modern lifts connecting the station entrance to all platforms, enabling independent travel for wheelchair users and others who struggle with steps.
Preparatory work will begin in autumn 2024, with main construction starting shortly after. The complete project is scheduled for completion by early 2026. Network Rail has pledged to minimise disruption to train services during the works, though some temporary changes will be unavoidable.
The 'Access for All' programme has already funded improvements at stations nationwide since its launch. Hither Green's inclusion reflects the government's commitment to modernising Britain's rail network and ensuring public transport serves all members of society.
Local residents and regular commuters have campaigned for accessibility improvements, particularly highlighting difficulties faced by elderly and disabled passengers. The announcement has been welcomed by the community, with many anticipating easier journeys once the new facilities open. Network Rail will work with train operators and local authorities to keep residents informed throughout the construction period.
