HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has launched an improved online registration service for Self Assessment, designed to make the process easier for new users. Individuals who need to file a Self Assessment tax return for the first time for the 2025 to 2026 tax year are required to register by 5 October 2026 to avoid potential penalties.
The enhanced system allows new Self Assessment customers to sign up through their Personal Tax Account using a more streamlined process. This includes forms with pre-populated information, online support signposting, and save and return functions. Once registered, customers will receive their Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) in their online account within 72 hours, a reduction from the previous waiting time of up to 15 days for postal delivery.
The deadline for submitting a tax return and paying any tax owed for the 2025 to 2026 tax year remains 31 January 2027. However, individuals with income to declare must register for Self Assessment before they can begin their tax return. HMRC's Chief Customer Officer, Myrtle Lloyd, noted that registering now provides ample time to complete returns before the January deadline.
HMRC also advises those who no longer need to complete a tax return to notify the department as soon as possible to prevent expected returns and potential non-submission penalties. Around 640,000 customers registered for Self Assessment in the 12 months leading up to 31 March 2026.
