Hodgkinson reaches 800m final after Werro's dramatic fall and appeal

Keely Hodgkinson has secured her place in the women's 800m final at the European Championships, moments after rival Audrey Werro fell but advanced following a successful appeal.

  • Keely Hodgkinson won her semi-final in 1 minute 57.38 seconds.
  • Audrey Werro fell during her semi-final but will race in the final after a successful appeal.
  • Jemma Reekie and Gabija Galvydyte will also compete in the final, making it a 10-athlete race.

Keely Hodgkinson has advanced to the women's 800m final at the European Championships, winning her semi-final in one minute 57.38 seconds. The Olympic champion led from the start, holding off Femke Broeders-Bol, a two-time world 400m hurdles champion who has switched events this season.

The final will also feature Audrey Werro, who suffered a dramatic fall on the final bend of her semi-final. The Swiss 22-year-old, who had run the fastest time in 43 years earlier this season, got back up and finished last but will race after a successful appeal, despite footage reportedly showing she clipped her own leg.

Hodgkinson will be joined by fellow Briton Jemma Reekie, who won the first semi-final. Lithuanian athlete Gabija Galvydyte, who was clipped by Werro during her fall, also advanced, resulting in a 10-athlete final instead of the usual nine.

Hodgkinson expressed her excitement for the final, stating, "The excitement makes me excited. I can't wait to step out there. It brings out the best in me." She added, "I love a good challenge. Hopefully it'll be a good race, a clean race, nobody falling over."

Why this matters: The women's 800m final is anticipated as a must-watch event due to the expected three-way battle between Hodgkinson, Werro, and Broeders-Bol.
