Hong Kong has officially recorded its highest ever temperature, with the city's weather observatory posting 36.9C on Sunday. This marks the highest temperature since records began in 1884, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.
The meteorological service stated that Typhoon Dolphin swept warm air over the city, contributing to the intense heat. The previous record for Hong Kong was 36.6C, set on 22 August 2017.
While the observatory's headquarters recorded 36.9C, other areas in the city experienced even higher temperatures. A weather station in Sheung Shui recorded 39.8C, the highest logged in Hong Kong since automatic weather stations were introduced in the 1980s.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued a "very hot weather warning" on Sunday. They advised citizens to drink water and avoid vigorous outdoor physical activities.
Typhoon Dolphin made landfall near Yuhuan in China's Zhejiang province on Sunday evening, approximately 1,000km north-east of Hong Kong.
