Hourly parking charges at Basildon University Hospital, Broomfield Hospital, Southend University Hospital, and Orsett Hospital have increased by approximately 50% from 31 July 2026. The free parking period at these sites has also been reduced from 30 minutes to 20 minutes.
For example, the cost of three hours of parking has risen from £4 to £6, and the daily rate has increased from £10 to £18. An antenatal expert, Priyanka Salamonczyk, stated that the hike will cause "additional stress" for pregnant patients, noting that her previous parking costs of £97.10 for appointments would now be £142.50.
The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSENFT) attributed the increase to rising operational costs, stating it is the first such rise in three years. Certain visitors, including chemotherapy patients and blue badge holders, will remain eligible for free parking. Patients and visitors can also apply for a weekly parking concession ticket.
