Great Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith made history today, 12 August 2026, by claiming a dominant 400m gold at the European Championships in Birmingham. The victory on his childhood track makes him the joint-most decorated man of all-time at the championships.
The 31-year-old stormed down the home straight, crossing the line in 44.17 seconds. This win completes a golden treble in the event for Hudson-Smith, who also secured titles in 2018 and 2022.
His eighth podium finish at the championships now equals French sprinter Christophe Lemaitre's men's record medal tally. Hudson-Smith, who joined local club Birchfield Harriers at age 10, acknowledged the home crowd by placing a hand on the banner bearing his name in the north stand.
