Humanitarian Steve Jones dies aged 77

Steve Jones, a humanitarian worker who dedicated his life to causes in Bangladesh and India, has died at 77. He later became a prominent advocate for people with pulmonary fibrosis.

Steve Jones, whose working life focused on humanitarian causes, particularly in Bangladesh and India, has died at the age of 77. Born in London, he studied geography at Bristol University and later pursued further studies at Cambridge University.

During the 1971 war between India and Pakistan, Mr Jones became involved with Operation Omega, a group that smuggled humanitarian aid into Bangladesh. He subsequently worked as a consultant economist and project planner, including for the World Bank on a flood action plan in Bangladesh in 1989 and a cyclone recovery project in 2007.

From 1992 to 2006, he spent 14 years with the Department for International Development, addressing rural poverty in India. After being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, he received a lung transplant. He then dedicated the last decade of his life to charity work, serving as a trustee, chair, and patient president for Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, and as president of the European Pulmonary Fibrosis Federation.
