  • The charges relate to the shooting of Julio Sosa-Celis in the leg in January.
  • Mr Castro had previously been charged in state court with assault and false reporting of a crime.

A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has been indicted on charges of lying to investigators about the events leading up to the shooting of a Venezuelan man during an immigration crackdown in Minneapolis earlier this year, according to multiple reports.

Christian Castro, the officer accused of shooting Julio Sosa-Celis in the leg in January, has been charged by US federal prosecutors with making false statements to federal investigators. Mr Castro had previously faced charges in state court.

The ICE officer was released from jail last week after Texas Republican governor Greg Abbott reportedly refused to immediately sign an extradition warrant to surrender him to Minnesota authorities.

Mr Sosa-Celis's attorney, Robin Wolpert, stated that Mr Castro has been indicted for making false statements, which she claims were made to cover up the shooting of her client. Mr Sosa-Celis was one of three people shot by federal immigration agents during the administration's operations in Minnesota.
