ID verification service IDScan has confirmed a data breach that led to the theft of driver's licenses from its systems. The company stated in a website notice that hackers stole the driver's licenses from its cloud.
The stolen information includes individuals' full names and driver's license numbers, as well as identity numbers from other government-issued documents, such as passports. IDScan, a Louisiana-based firm, is used by corporate customers to verify customer identity documents.
The company's notice is its first acknowledgement of being hacked, following a report a week prior about a year-long intrusion. IDScan said it received information about a hack claim around September 1, the same day a cybersecurity journalist reported a data breach.
The journalist reported being alerted to a dark web site allowing searches of driver's license information for over 150 million people in the United States and Canada, including access to photos. The Pentagon and FBI stated last week they were investigating the suspected breach. IDScan's investigation is ongoing.
