Independent review publishes final report on mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions

The final report and recommendations from the Independent Review into Mental Health Conditions, ADHD and Autism have been published today, 9 October 2026. The review was initiated in response to growing public discussion surrounding mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions, alongside increasing recognition of difficulties people face in obtaining appropriate diagnosis and support.

The review, which involved input from over 120 colleagues, sought to evaluate whether there is an increased prevalence of these conditions and what is driving observed changes in diagnoses. It also examined the impact of these factors on the support required by individuals.

The report includes recommendations on how best to address the needs of people with mental health conditions, ADHD, and autism. The authors, including Professor Peter Fonagy CBE FMedSci, Professor Sir Simon Wessely GBE FMedSci FRS, and Professor Gillian Baird OBE, presented their findings.
