India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a byelection defeat in the Bankipur constituency in Patna, Bihar. The seat had been held by the BJP for three decades.
Prashant Kishor, a political strategist, secured the win for his Jan Suraaj (Good Governance) party. The byelection was closely observed as it occurred after nationwide student protests concerning exam paper leaks, which led to the education minister's resignation.
The BJP's president, Nitin Nabin, who previously represented Bankipur, described the largely Gen Z protesters as "a virus and a cockroach gang devoted to breaking the country" during the campaign. Following his loss, Nabin stated the party would "undertake a thorough introspection."
Ajoy Bose, a Delhi-based political analyst, noted that the Bankipur defeat carries symbolic weight beyond the single constituency, particularly given its timing after the student protests. He cautioned against interpreting the outcome as a nationwide shift in voter sentiment but suggested it challenges the perception of the BJP's electoral invincibility.
