Liddle's columns often targeted what he described as the politically correct, liberal-left elite. He was the first journalist to be censured by the Press Complaints Commission in 2010.

Before his career as a columnist, Liddle was editor of the Today programme on Radio 4, a role he took on in 1998. He left the BBC in 2003 after being asked to choose between his columns and his position at the corporation.
