Indonesia has triumphed in the inaugural Fifa Asean Cup, a new tournament for Southeast Asia, after defeating Thailand in a penalty shootout in the final. The match, held in Jakarta, concluded 2-2 after 120 minutes before Indonesia secured a 4-2 victory in the shootout.
The tournament, which also included a second-tier Asean Challenge Cup won by Hong Kong, was announced by Fifa President Gianni Infantino last October. Infantino's recent activities have included visits to Asian member associations, such as inaugurating new headquarters in Macau and signing an agreement for a new national stadium in Mongolia.
The timing of these events coincides with the approaching Fifa presidential election. Asia's member associations are divided regarding support for the incumbent president.
The Asean Cup saw six nations compete in the Challenge Cup and eight in the main tournament. China and India were invited to participate but declined, with India opting for friendlies against Brazil, Panama, and Uruguay.
