Transport for London has handed Spanish technology giant Indra Group a major contract to modernise the capital's entire ticketing and access control systems, affecting millions of daily journeys across the Tube, buses and rail network.
The comprehensive overhaul will upgrade the technology behind Oyster cards, contactless payments and access systems across all TfL services, including the Underground, buses, Overground and DLR. Indra Group will handle both the initial modernisation and ongoing maintenance of the network.
London's current ticketing infrastructure, whilst robust, has operated for many years and needs updating to meet the demands of the growing city. The ageing system processes millions of transactions daily but requires continuous updates to keep pace with technological advances.
The modernisation covers everything from station hardware and vehicle-mounted systems to the backend infrastructure processing transactions and managing fare data. For one of the world's largest urban transport networks, reliable ticketing systems are essential to keeping London moving.
Passengers can expect fewer technical glitches, faster entry and exit times, and more consistent service across all transport modes. The upgrade will also enhance security features, improve fraud detection and potentially enable new fare products and integrated travel options in future.
