Gianni Infantino, the FIFA president, has reportedly angered numerous Concacaf nations by attending a Caribbean Football Union (CFU) meeting in the Dominican Republic. During the meeting, Infantino announced FIFA-funded development projects for the region, which had been delayed for months.
Multiple sources present at the CFU meeting indicated that many Concacaf members were infuriated by Infantino's conduct. This reaction was particularly strong as Concacaf president Victor Montagliani had specifically asked Infantino to stay away from the event.
The Guardian reported that Infantino's attendance appears to be an effort to lobby for election votes among Caribbean countries. This move is reportedly aimed at creating a split within Concacaf, which has aligned with Uefa and the Asian Football Confederation in calling for Infantino's resignation following the World Cup sell-off controversy.
In a letter sent on Friday, Montagliani had requested that the FIFA president reconsider his attendance, stating that his presence would divert attention from a regional under-14 tournament being held concurrently with the meeting.
