Jakob Ingebrigtsen was pipped to victory in a thrilling finish to the men's 5km race at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. Eritrea's Dawit Seare found a late burst of energy to claim gold, with compatriot Saymon Amanuel securing bronze.
The 26-year-old Norwegian, an Olympic 5,000m champion, was competing in only his sixth race of an injury-affected season. He had won the 5,000m on the track at the Ultimate Athletics Championships in Budapest just eight days prior. Ingebrigtsen powered into the lead in the final kilometre but was caught and passed by Seare in the dying stages, with Seare winning in 12 minutes and 56 seconds.
In the women's 5km, Ethiopia's Likina Amebaw was imperious, making an early break to win decisively in 14:41. Caroline Gitonga of Kenya finished seven seconds behind in second, and Rose Davies of Australia claimed bronze. Britain's Hannah Nuttall finished 10th.
Germany's Robert Farken was a surprise winner in the men's mile, catching American Yared Nuguse in the final 100m to win his first major title in 3:51.80. Britain's Jake Heyward achieved a personal best on the roads, finishing 11th in 3:55.76. Agathe Guillemot of France won the women's mile in 4:22.74, the fastest time in the world this year on the road.
